This is the first meal service I’ve tried, so I don’t have much to compare it to, but it came in my life at the perfect time, and for that I am thankful.
Right now dinner time is complete chaos. Rockwell has recently given up his early evening nap. That one nap I depended on to get dinner done! Then, he started teething and apparently the feeling of the floor makes him scream his pants off. Even then, I cooked dinner night after night, but would be so frustrated by the end that it almost wasn’t worth it. When dinner was complete I would rather lay down on the bed and stare at the ceiling than eat a hot meal at the dinner table.
I was desperate and joked with Angelo that dinner would be take-out from now on. Take out is good here and there, but definitely not something I want to eat everyday. I do love cooking and I just can’t give up fresh home cooked meals, no matter what period we’re in with baby number three.
On top of all that mess, Angelo has gone vegetarian! The hardest part about being a vegetarian is not eating pasta, pizza, and salad at every meal. If you’re used to eating meat, cooking a vegetation dinner every night can cause serious dilemmas. What the heck am I supposed to make?!
HelloFresh may not be the answer to all my problems, but other than having my meals prepared for me, HelloFresh is the next best thing.
The Good
- Grocery Shopping
HelloFresh meals come with everything you’ll need for that meal. The only thing you need to have on hand is salt, pepper, oil, water, and cooking equipment! No more getting half way through a recipe and realizing you don’t have any breadcrumbs. - Meal Planning
If I had to thank HelloFresh for one thing, it’d be for giving me back my hours of Pinterest surfing for dinner ideas. You are able to pick and choose which meal you want, but I let them surprise me. - Easy Recipes
The step-by-step recipe cards include pictures! The directions are simple and so easy to follow that I would feel confident enough to leave the cooking to my husband. 😉 - Big (new) Flavors
All four meals I’ve made from HelloFresh have been fantastic! It’s made me go outside of my comfort zone with a few items (farrro, bok chop) and my family is tasting new flavors! I would have never picked these meals out on my own
- Learning how to cook
If you aren’t much of a chef at home, these recipes/meal kits would be absolutely perfect for your start at cooking. Not only will you have tasty dinners on the table, but you’ll definitely learn a thing or two in the kitchen along the way. I’ve already learned what to do with cilantro stems instead of throwing them in the trash. Who knew?! - Easy and Flexible for special needs
The whole reason I ordered HelloFresh was because their Veggie plan intrigued me. They have gluten free, meat free, dairy free, and many other great meals for everyone to enjoy. A lot of the vegetarian meals are easily made vegan-friendly, since evertything is packaged seperately.
The Not-So-Good
- Portion Size
This can actually be a a “good” if you’re watching your portions and on some sort of diet. BUT I ordered the family size that is supposed to feed 4 and I don’t think it’s enough. Good thing my kids are small! - A lot of waste
I think this is a problem with all meal kit delivery systems because there’s really no way around it since everything is measured out. I need a bigger recycling container. (Thankful a lot of it is recyclable) - The Price
Again, this can be a “good” depending on how you look at it. I think getting your groceries and recipes delivered to you is worth the price. Some may not.
Overall, we had a great experience with HelloFresh.
